Case Western vs Colgate for biology: which is better for undergrad?

The biggest practical tradeoff is research intensity versus small-college attention. Case Western sits inside a major research university ecosystem with direct ties to Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and its medical school, so biology students have unusually easy access to labs, clinical settings, and advanced coursework. Colgate offers a more intimate liberal arts environment, with smaller classes and close faculty interaction, but its biology opportunities are built on a smaller scale.

For biology specifically, Case has the edge in breadth. You are more likely to find specialized upper-level options, a larger volume of active lab groups, and easier pathways into medically adjacent experiences because of the surrounding health and biotech infrastructure. That matters if you want to test out subfields like neuroscience, molecular biology, immunology, or biomedical research before grad school.

Colgate is still strong academically, especially if you learn best in discussion-based classes and want professors who will know you very well. For grad school recommendations and mentoring, that can be a real advantage. But for biology, the school does not have the same depth of research activity or hospital-connected opportunities that Case can offer simply by location and institutional setup.

For pre-health preparation, Case is also especially practical. Being near major hospitals can help with shadowing, volunteering, and sometimes research that connects more directly to medicine or public health. Colgate students can absolutely reach those goals too, but it may take more planning because Hamilton is more rural and the surrounding ecosystem is less dense.

If your priority is the strongest biology platform with the most built-in research and health-related access, I would pick Case Western. I would choose Colgate only if you know you want the liberal arts setting enough that the smaller scale is worth giving up some of Case’s scientific and clinical infrastructure.
