MIT vs Cal Poly for engineering: which is better for hands-on undergrad experience?

I’m a junior trying to narrow down college options for engineering, and these two schools keep coming up for very different reasons. MIT seems stronger for research and prestige, while Cal Poly is known for its hands-on learning and project-based approach.

I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to give undergrads a better practical engineering experience.

The biggest practical tradeoff is structured, everyday hands-on training versus access to an unmatched research ecosystem. Cal Poly is built around a learn-by-doing model, so lab work, design projects, and application-focused coursework tend to show up early and often in the undergraduate experience. MIT also gives undergrads plenty of chances to build, prototype, and work in labs, but the environment leans more toward theory blended with high-level research and self-directed opportunity.

For pure hands-on undergraduate engineering, Cal Poly often has the clearer edge in how the curriculum is organized. Its reputation comes from making applied work central to the classroom experience, not something you have to seek out on the side. Many students choose it specifically because the teaching culture is very undergraduate-focused and practical, with strong ties to industry and a lot of emphasis on building things that work in real settings.

MIT is not lacking in practical experience at all. Undergrads can get involved in maker spaces, design teams, and ambitious engineering projects very early. The difference is that at MIT, some of the best hands-on experiences come from taking initiative in a fast-moving, extremely intense environment, while at Cal Poly the applied component is more baked into the standard path.

That also affects day-to-day life. At Cal Poly, practical engineering can feel more consistent and classroom-centered. At MIT, the ceiling is probably higher because the labs, research culture, and technical community are exceptional, but the experience may feel less uniformly applied from class to class.

If your main question is strictly which school tends to deliver the more practical, hands-on undergraduate experience by default, Cal Poly is the better answer. If you want a place where hands-on work exists alongside top-tier theory, cutting-edge research, and enormous name recognition, MIT offers more range but not necessarily a more consistently application-first undergrad experience.
