UC Davis vs Villanova for finance careers: which is better for getting into finance jobs?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UC Davis and Villanova, and I want to study something that can lead to a finance career. I know both schools have good reputations, but I’m not sure how they compare for breaking into finance after college.

I’m mainly trying to understand which one tends to give students a stronger path into finance roles.

Villanova is the better pick for finance careers, especially if you mean traditional finance recruiting like investment banking, asset management, corporate finance, and East Coast financial services roles. Its business school is a central part of the university, finance is one of its most visible strengths, and it benefits from close proximity to Philadelphia and reasonable access to New York. For undergraduates who want a more direct pipeline into finance internships and alumni-driven recruiting, Villanova usually has the clearer path.

One major differentiator is how established Villanova is in undergraduate business education. The Villanova School of Business has a strong reputation with employers, and finance is one of the areas where that reputation is most useful. At many schools, finance recruiting depends heavily on student initiative alone, but Villanova tends to have a more built-out culture around business careers, employer connections, and alumni participation in hiring.

Location also matters here. Villanova’s placement advantages are helped by being near Philadelphia, with New York reachable for networking, internships, and interviews. That makes it easier to build relevant experience during the school year, not just over the summer. UC Davis has solid outcomes overall, but it is not especially known as a finance feeder in the same way, and its strongest identity is broader across research and public university academics rather than undergraduate finance recruiting.

The last big difference is the type of finance ecosystem surrounding students. Villanova has more of a concentrated pre-professional business environment, where classmates, clubs, and recruiters are often aligned around finance and consulting paths. UC Davis can still lead to finance jobs, particularly in corporate finance, accounting-related roles, or careers tied to California industries, but for a student specifically trying to maximize access to finance recruiting right out of college, Villanova holds the edge.
