Which is better for a marketing major: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or University of Miami?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both of these schools are on it for marketing. I know they’re very different in location and campus vibe, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one has the stronger marketing program and better opportunities for getting internships and jobs afterward.
I’m a high school junior looking for a school where I can actually build experience in the field, not just take classes.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC tends to offer the broader business-school scale and recruiting reach, while the University of Miami gives you a smaller, more relationship-driven environment in a major business and media market. For marketing specifically, UIUC’s Gies College of Business has a strong national reputation and a large alumni network, which can matter for recruiting across many regions and industries. Miami’s location in South Florida can be a real advantage for internships during the school year, especially in areas tied to hospitality, sports, luxury brands, real estate, entertainment, and international business.
If your priority is the overall strength of the academic business platform, I would give UIUC the edge. Gies is well known, has a larger business ecosystem, and usually provides more depth in student organizations, employer access, and peer network size. That can translate into more options if you are still figuring out whether you want brand management, digital marketing, sales, analytics, or another business path connected to marketing.
If your priority is hands-on access and local industry exposure while you’re still in college, Miami is very compelling. The school’s location makes it easier to connect with companies off campus, and the smaller scale can make it easier to build direct relationships with professors and career offices. For a student who is proactive about networking, that can lead to meaningful internships earlier.
For jobs after graduation, UIUC probably gives you the stronger all-around platform, especially if you want geographic flexibility beyond one region. Miami can still be excellent, but some of its edge is tied to how much you want to tap into South Florida’s business scene. My honest take is that UIUC is the better pick for marketing if you want the stronger program reputation and wider recruiting reach, while Miami becomes more attractive if you specifically want to build your experience in South Florida and value smaller-scale access over breadth.
