University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Arizona State for finance jobs: which is better for recruiting and career outcomes?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and want to major in finance. I’m mainly interested in which one has stronger recruiting for finance jobs and better career outcomes after graduation.

I know both are large public universities, but I’m not sure how much the school name, alumni network, and access to internships matter for landing finance roles.

The biggest practical tradeoff is national finance recruiting depth versus location-driven access: UIUC tends to place better into a wider range of finance roles and has a stronger national brand in business, while ASU gives you solid opportunities tied especially to the Phoenix market and a fast-growing regional economy. For straight finance recruiting, UIUC usually has the deeper employer presence, stronger alumni pull in major finance hubs, and more established pathways into competitive internships. ASU is not weak, but its outcomes are more likely to depend on how aggressively you network and how well you use the local market.

At UIUC, Gies has a strong reputation and a large alumni base across Chicago, which matters a lot for internships in corporate finance, banking-related roles, asset management, and consulting-adjacent business jobs. Chicago is the key advantage here. Even though Urbana-Champaign is not in a major city, the school has longstanding recruiting relationships and a well-known pipeline into Illinois and Midwest employers.

ASU’s W. P. Carey School is also respected and very employer-connected, especially in Arizona. Phoenix has grown a lot as a business hub, so ASU students can access internships during the school year more easily than students in a college town. That can be a real advantage for experience-building.

If you mean broader finance careers like corporate finance, commercial banking, financial planning, treasury, or analyst roles at large companies, both can work well, though UIUC still has the edge in national reach.

So on recruiting and long-term career outcomes for finance, I’d pick UIUC unless ASU is significantly cheaper or you strongly want to build your career in Arizona.
