Is University of Maine or UC Berkeley more prestigious?

UC Berkeley is much more prestigious in the way most people use that word. It has a national and international academic reputation, is widely recognized for top-tier research, and carries especially strong name recognition in fields like engineering, computer science, economics, and the natural sciences. University of Maine is a respected public university, but its reputation is much more regional.

One big reason is visibility. Berkeley is one of the flagship campuses in the University of California system and is known far beyond California by employers, graduate schools, and academics around the world. Maine is well regarded within its state and in parts of New England, but it does not have the same broad brand recognition.

Another differentiator is academic influence. Berkeley is associated with major research output, prominent faculty, and departments that are routinely treated as leaders in their fields. That kind of research presence shapes prestige because people often equate prestige with who is producing influential scholarship and attracting high-level academic talent. Maine has solid programs and meaningful research of its own, especially in areas tied to its location and mission, but it is not seen on the same level overall.

Prestige also comes from who knows the school and what assumptions they make when they hear the name. Hearing “UC Berkeley” tends to signal a highly selective, academically intense institution with strong outcomes and a powerful alumni network. Hearing “University of Maine” usually signals a legitimate public university serving its region well, but not a school that carries the same elite-level reputation. So if the question is purely about prestige, Berkeley is the clear answer.
