Is University of Maine or Wake Forest considered more prestigious?

Part of that comes from the type of institution each one is. University of Maine is a public research university, and its reputation is tied more to being an accessible flagship with solid programs rather than to prestige in the narrow status sense people often mean.

That does not mean Maine is weak academically. It has real strengths in areas like engineering, environmental and marine-related fields, forestry, and research connected to the state’s industries and geography. But if someone asks which school is more prestigious in a broad, national, reputation-based way, most people in admissions, employers, and academia would say Wake Forest.

So on the specific question of prestige, Wake Forest is the clearer answer. University of Maine can still be an excellent choice depending on program and cost, but in terms of overall academic reputation and how the name is typically perceived, Wake Forest stands noticeably higher.
