Carnegie Mellon vs UCLA for game design: which is better for game design students?
I'm a high school junior trying to narrow down colleges and I'm especially interested in game design. Carnegie Mellon and UCLA both seem strong in different ways, but I can't tell which one is the better fit for actually studying game design as a student.
I'm mostly trying to understand how the programs compare in terms of learning opportunities and preparation for a career in games.

Carnegie Mellon is the stronger pick if you want a more direct, structured path into game design itself. CMU has dedicated game-focused options, including the Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology program and the Entertainment Technology Center at the graduate level, and its undergraduate environment makes it easier to combine design, programming, art, and interactive media in one place.
One major difference is how clearly game design exists as an academic lane. At CMU, game-related study is more visible and more integrated across schools like Computer Science, Art, and Design, so students interested in gameplay systems, interactive storytelling, technical design, or creative technology can find coursework and collaborators without having to piece everything together on their own. UCLA has strong departments that can support game interests, but it is less centered on game design as a distinct undergraduate track.
Another differentiator is the project culture. CMU is especially known for interdisciplinary, build-heavy work, which matters a lot in games because employers care about what you have made, not just what you studied. If you want frequent opportunities to prototype, test, revise, and work in mixed teams of artists, designers, and programmers, CMU tends to align more closely with how game development actually works.
UCLA has real advantages, especially its location and access to the broader entertainment and media world in Los Angeles. That can be valuable if your interests overlap with animation, film, digital media, interactive storytelling, or the business side of entertainment. But for someone asking specifically about preparation as a game design student, CMU usually offers the more targeted academic setup and the clearer bridge from college work to a game-focused portfolio.
