Is the University of New Hampshire or Boston University better for a communications major?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and I’m interested in studying communications. I know both have different campus vibes and locations, but I want to understand which one is generally considered stronger for the major itself.

I’m mostly looking at the overall quality of the program and how well it prepares students for internships and jobs after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Boston University gives you a much larger media market, denser internship access during the school year, and a more nationally visible communications environment, while the University of New Hampshire offers a smaller, more traditional campus setting with a solid but less industry-connected path. For communications specifically, BU has a clear edge because its College of Communication is one of the school’s signature academic units, and being in Boston matters a lot for internships in media, public relations, advertising, journalism, and digital content. UNH can still prepare students well, but its program does not have the same level of built-in proximity to major employers or the same reputation in the communications space.

At BU, the program itself is a major draw. The communications ecosystem is broad, with strong opportunities across film and television, journalism, advertising, PR, and emerging media, and students benefit from frequent access to working professionals, alumni, and organizations in the city. That kind of exposure tends to make a difference when you are trying to land internships before senior year rather than waiting until graduation to build experience.

UNH’s advantage is more about environment than pure communications strength. You may get smaller-feeling classes, a more classic college campus, and potentially easier access to faculty, student media, and leadership roles. For some students, that translates into more hands-on involvement earlier on.

So on the major alone, Boston University is the stronger choice. UNH is a reasonable option if cost, campus feel, or personal fit makes it significantly more appealing, but in terms of program reputation, professional access, and job-relevant opportunities in communications, BU has the advantage.
