Is it harder to get into Northeastern or UCLA for undergraduate admissions?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UCLA gets an enormous, self-selecting applicant pool and has very limited space for nonresidents, while Northeastern’s selectivity is shaped more by application strategy, institutional priorities, and a private-school admissions process. In plain terms, both are very hard admits, but UCLA is usually the tougher one overall, especially for out-of-state applicants. Northeastern is also highly selective, yet its admissions landscape tends to be a little more variable from year to year because of factors like Early Decision and enrollment management.

UCLA is one of the most sought-after public universities in the country, and it draws huge numbers of applicants with top grades, rigorous coursework, and strong extracurriculars. It also does not use ED, so everyone competes in the same broad pool, and for non-California residents there are fewer seats available. That combination makes it especially difficult to predict and often harder to crack.

Northeastern is absolutely not an easy school to get into, but its process works differently. As a private university, it has more flexibility in shaping the class, and applying ED can matter there in a way it does not at UCLA. Northeastern also gets a very large number of applications and is known for being selective, but many students and counselors would still place UCLA a notch above it in raw admissions difficulty.

The one important exception is context: for a strong in-state California applicant, UCLA is still extremely selective but can be a bit less daunting than it is for an out-of-state student, while Northeastern’s difficulty does not hinge on residency in the same way.
