Cornell vs Barnard for women in STEM: which is better for a female student interested in science and engineering?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list, and both Cornell and Barnard are on my radar. I’m interested in STEM and want a school where women in science and engineering feel supported and have strong opportunities.

I know the two schools are very different, so I’m trying to understand which one tends to be a better fit for a woman who wants to study STEM and build a strong academic and professional network.

Cornell is the stronger option for a woman who is seriously considering engineering, while Barnard stands out more for a science-focused path in a women-centered undergraduate environment. Cornell has a full College of Engineering, large-scale research infrastructure, and direct access to engineering majors, labs, design teams, and recruiting pipelines. Barnard offers excellent science preparation and the advantages of a women’s college, but it does not have its own engineering school, so the engineering route is much more limited and indirect.

Research and career access also look different. Cornell’s scale creates more built-in STEM opportunities on campus, especially in engineering research, interdisciplinary institutes, and employer recruiting for technical roles. Barnard students can absolutely do serious science and research, especially through Columbia-connected labs, but for engineering specifically, Cornell offers a more direct and deeper bench of opportunities.

If your interest is broad STEM with a possible lean toward biology, chemistry, neuroscience, environmental science, or physics in a close-knit women-centered setting, Barnard is very compelling. If you already mean engineering in a concrete sense, Cornell gives you far more runway.
