Cornell vs. ETH Zurich for Computer Science: Which Is the Better Choice?

I’m a high school senior deciding between studying computer science at Cornell and ETH Zurich. I’m interested in strong technical coursework, research opportunities, and preparation for a career in software engineering or AI, but I’m unsure how the two programs compare overall.

For an English-speaking high school senior seeking both deep computer science training and a straightforward path into U.S. software engineering or AI, Cornell is the more practical choice. Its undergraduate CS program is taught in English, offers substantial elective flexibility across AI, systems, theory, and applications, and gives students direct access to Cornell Tech, Cornell’s Ithaca research labs, and the broader U.S. internship ecosystem. ETH Zurich is academically exceptional, but its bachelor’s-level CS instruction is primarily in German.

Cornell’s curriculum lets undergraduates combine core CS with work in fields such as mathematics, statistics, electrical engineering, robotics, information science, or business. That flexibility matters for AI in particular, where strong preparation often includes machine learning, probability, optimization, data science, and domain-specific work. ETH is especially compelling for a student who is fluent in German, wants a highly rigorous and more theory-intensive European education, and may pursue graduate study or work in Switzerland or continental Europe. It has a world-class research reputation in computer science, machine learning, robotics, and related technical fields, and its master’s programs are largely English-taught. Its undergraduate structure is typically less flexible than Cornell’s and follows a more exam-centered European model.

Career geography is the other major distinction. Cornell provides more established recruiting routes to U.S. technology companies, startups, and research organizations, while ETH has outstanding connections in Switzerland and Europe. For a student planning to work in the United States after graduation, Cornell also avoids the language and immigration complications that can arise when pursuing a Swiss bachelor’s degree and European employment as a non-European citizen.

Cost can change the calculation substantially. If ETH is dramatically less expensive for your circumstances and you are prepared to study technical material in German, its academic value is hard to beat. Otherwise, Cornell offers the clearer all-around undergraduate experience for the goals you listed.
