How should I choose between Colgate and Northwestern for college?

Northwestern is the stronger pick for most students deciding between these two. It offers far broader academic options, easier access to internships and research through its location near Chicago, and a larger overall platform in areas like journalism, engineering, media, economics, and the performing arts. Colgate is appealing in very real ways, but Northwestern tends to leave more doors open.

The first big difference is academic range. Northwestern has multiple undergraduate schools and is unusually strong across very different fields, so students who are undecided or who may want to combine interests often get more flexibility there. Colgate has a classic liberal arts model with excellent teaching and a more intimate classroom environment, but it cannot match Northwestern’s depth in specialized programs or cross-disciplinary opportunities.

The second differentiator is access to opportunities outside the classroom. Northwestern benefits from being in Evanston with direct proximity to Chicago, which matters for internships during the school year, networking, guest speakers, and professional exposure. Colgate’s Hamilton location creates a more self-contained residential experience, which some students love, but it does mean fewer spontaneous off-campus opportunities during the semester.

Campus feel is where Colgate has its strongest case. It is smaller, more insulated, and often feels more traditional and tight-knit, with a strong residential culture and a notably pretty campus. Northwestern feels more energetic and expansive, with Big Ten school spirit, more varied social scenes, and more students moving in different academic and extracurricular directions at once.

One thing I would weigh carefully is how much certainty you want versus how much exploration you want. Colgate can be excellent for someone who knows they want a small liberal arts environment and values close faculty attention above almost everything else. Northwestern usually makes more sense when you want top-tier resources with room to change your mind without running out of options.
