How does academic reputation compare between Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Cambridge?

Cambridge carries the stronger academic reputation overall, especially internationally. It has centuries of global scholarly prestige, is instantly recognizable to employers and academics across countries, and is widely seen as one of the world’s top universities. Washington University in St. Louis is highly respected in the U.S., particularly in medicine, research, and certain graduate and professional circles, but it does not have the same universal name recognition.

Among academics and graduate schools, Cambridge has a broader reputation for intellectual rigor across disciplines and a particularly strong standing in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and sciences. Its tutorial-supervision style and long history of producing major scholars give it a level of academic cachet that few institutions match. WashU is absolutely taken seriously by graduate programs, especially in fields tied to biomedical research, public health, and pre-med preparation, but its reputation is more concentrated than globally iconic.
