How does WashU's academic reputation compare to Stanford's?

Stanford carries a clearly stronger overall academic reputation than Washington University in St. Louis. In academia, Stanford is viewed as one of the small handful of institutions with elite global name recognition across fields, while WashU is respected as an excellent university but not usually placed in that same top tier. For many employers, especially outside the Midwest or outside fields where WashU is especially strong, Stanford’s name is more instantly recognizable and tends to travel farther.

One concrete difference is breadth of reputation across disciplines.
