Is the University of Washington considered prestigious compared with MIT for college admissions and resume value?

MIT carries a much stronger prestige signal overall, especially in college admissions, graduate admissions, and on resumes across the country. University of Washington is absolutely respected, particularly in computer science, engineering, medicine, public health, and for employers in the Pacific Northwest, but it is not viewed at the same level of name recognition or selectivity as MIT. On an application or resume, MIT tends to function as an immediate national and international brand in a way UW usually does not.

UW fits a different kind of student: someone who wants a highly respected major public research university with real strength in specific fields and strong regional influence. In tech, health, and research-heavy areas, UW can carry a lot of weight, and in some contexts its reputation is excellent rather than merely good. A UW graduate with strong internships, research, and grades can be extremely competitive, including against graduates from more famous private universities.

On resumes, the difference is usually biggest when the reviewer knows little else about the candidate and is reacting to school name alone. MIT gets a stronger instant reaction almost everywhere. UW’s value rises a lot when the reviewer understands its strongest programs or when the candidate has concrete accomplishments that show what they did there.

For grad school admissions, MIT also has the more powerful general prestige effect, but faculty recommendations, research output, GPA, and fit matter far more than school name by itself. So the perception gap is real, but it does not mean UW lacks credibility. It means MIT is elite-brand prestige, while UW is a well-regarded flagship university whose reputation becomes especially strong in certain disciplines and regions.
