Is it harder to get into UC Berkeley or Duke for undergraduate admissions?

Duke is harder to get into overall for undergraduate admissions. Both schools are extremely selective, but Duke tends to be the more difficult admit because it has a smaller undergraduate population, a more nationally concentrated applicant pool, and an admissions process that is especially tough in Regular Decision. UC Berkeley is also very hard to enter, but its selectivity varies more by college, major, and California residency.

One major difference is the applicant pool each school is drawing from. Duke receives applications from a highly self-selecting national and international pool where many students are already top academic performers with strong extracurricular profiles. Berkeley gets an enormous volume of applicants too, but it serves a public mission and evaluates many more in-state applicants within the UC system, which makes the overall picture a bit less uniform than Duke’s.

The admissions structure also matters. Duke uses a private university process with rounds like Early Decision and Regular Decision, and the bar in its overall pool is very high. Berkeley, as part of the UC system, does not offer Early Decision or Early Action, and it also has college- and major-specific differences that can make some Berkeley pathways especially competitive while others are slightly less so.

Another real differentiator is residency and program choice. For a California resident applying to a less impacted Berkeley major, the odds may look different than for an out-of-state student applying to a highly sought-after program like engineering or business-related pathways. Duke does not have that same public-university residency dynamic, so for the average applicant asking which school is tougher in the broadest sense, Duke is the better answer.
