Is it harder to get into UC Berkeley or Yale?

Yale is harder to get into than UC Berkeley for most applicants. Yale has a much smaller undergraduate population, and builds a class through a highly selective private-school process that looks for exceptional distinction across academics, activities, recommendations, and personal fit. UC Berkeley is also extremely competitive, but as a large public university it enrolls many more undergraduates and evaluates applicants within the UC system’s broader, high-volume admissions model.

Another big difference is who each school is built to serve. Berkeley gives priority to California residents as a public flagship, so in-state and out-of-state applicants can face different odds depending on the campus and major. Yale does not have a state-resident preference, and because it draws from a global applicant pool for a relatively small class, the competition is intense across the board.
