Which is better for software engineering: UC Berkeley or Carnegie Mellon?
I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down colleges for software engineering, and these two keep coming up as top choices. I know both are strong, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered better for software engineering and why.

Carnegie Mellon is often seen as the more focused, engineering-heavy option for software engineering itself, while UC Berkeley gives you elite CS strength inside a larger public university with broader flexibility, a huge tech ecosystem, and especially strong proximity to major software companies.
For software engineering reputation specifically, CMU usually has the edge in how directly structured and industry-recognized its program is. CMU tends to feel more intentionally built around computing. If your question is narrowly, “Which school is more associated with top-tier software engineering training?” the answer many people in tech and academia would give is Carnegie Mellon. If the question is, “Which school gives me one of the very best CS educations in the world with unmatched Silicon Valley access?” Berkeley is an equally serious answer.
So in a head-to-head on software engineering reputation alone, I’d give Carnegie Mellon a slight nod. Berkeley is not meaningfully behind in overall CS prestige, but CMU is the name that more often comes up when people are talking specifically about highly structured, top-end software engineering and systems-oriented training.
