Is Drexel or Penn State better value for an undergraduate degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost predictability versus built-in career experience. Penn State is often the cheaper path, especially for in-state students, while Drexel’s co-op model can provide substantial work experience before graduation but usually comes with a higher sticker price and a five-year timeline for many students. For a student focused on limiting debt, Penn State more often comes out ahead on raw financial value unless Drexel gives a strong aid package or the co-op structure directly fits your goals.

Drexel’s main value case is its co-op system. That can lead to paid work experience, a stronger resume by graduation, and clearer access to employers in fields like engineering, business, computing, design, and health-related areas. But the math matters: a longer program, Philadelphia living costs, and higher tuition can still leave you paying much more overall even after co-op earnings.

Penn State’s value tends to come from the combination of lower cost for Pennsylvania residents, a traditional four-year timeline, and a very broad national alumni network. It has strong recruiting and name recognition in many fields, especially engineering, business, supply chain, and sciences. You may need to be more proactive about internships than at Drexel, but many students still graduate with solid experience without paying Drexel-level prices.

If you are out of state for Penn State, the comparison gets closer. In that case, I would look less at published cost and more at your actual net price from each school, then compare that against your intended major. Drexel can make more financial sense for career-focused majors where co-op participation is a major advantage, but it is harder to call it the better value if it requires much more borrowing.
