Stanford vs. Berkeley for artificial intelligence: which is better for undergrads?
I’m trying to decide between Stanford and Berkeley and want to study artificial intelligence as an undergrad. Both schools seem strong, but it’s hard to tell which one is better for actually learning AI and getting involved in research.
I’m mostly interested in the overall undergrad experience for someone focused on AI, not just rankings or prestige.

For an undergraduate focused on AI, Stanford usually offers the smoother and more personalized experience, while Berkeley offers a bigger, more self-directed path with exceptional depth if you are comfortable competing for access. Both schools are outstanding in AI, both have major faculty and research presence, and both place students very well into labs, startups, and graduate school. Its AI and CS ecosystem is enormous, and that can be a huge benefit because there are so many advanced courses, research areas, and highly driven peers. But the undergraduate experience can feel less curated. Large lower-division classes, more competition for research openings, and a need to be proactive are real parts of the experience. For some students, that is energizing rather than frustrating.
If your main question is about actually learning AI, Berkeley can be phenomenal for a student who is independent, resilient, and eager to chase opportunities. If your main question is about access, mentoring, and a more flexible undergraduate life while still doing elite AI work, Stanford is often the more comfortable place to do that.
