Columbia makes more sense for the student who wants a broader liberal arts experience first, with film shaped by a highly academic, intellectual setting in New York. You can absolutely prepare for a film career there, especially if you are interested in screenwriting, criticism, theory, media studies, documentary, or crossing film with other fields like literature, politics, or visual art. New York also offers arts access and internships, just in a different media environment than LA.

If the question is which school is stronger for film students overall, UCLA has the clearer edge. It is more directly associated with undergraduate film training and with the professional pipeline into the entertainment industry.
