What is the proper format for my college essay?

I've been working on my personal statement and I'm beginning to wonder about the correct formatting requirements for college essays. Is there a standard font, size, or spacing that schools expect? For example, does it have to be Times New Roman, 12-point, double-spaced, or are those just suggestions?

Also, does it matter if I use indented paragraphs or leave a space between them? I'm planning to submit through the Common App, if that changes anything. I'm trying to make sure my essay looks professional but I don't want to mess up because of something small like formatting!

When submitting your college essay through the Common App, there's actually a lot more flexibility with formatting than you might expect. The Common App text box removes most of the detailed formatting, so your essay won't appear to colleges exactly how it looks in your word processor.

Here are some guidelines to keep things simple:

Font and Size: Don't worry about fonts like Times New Roman or font size when pasting your essay into the Common App. The platform will standardize the appearance. If you’re asked to upload a document (rare for the Common App’s main essay but possible for some supplements), stick with Times New Roman or Arial, 12-point font, and standard margins.

Spacing: The Common App essay box is single-spaced by default. You can use paragraph breaks by hitting enter once or twice, depending on your preference. Do not add double spacing as you might for a school paper.

Paragraphs: It’s best to use a single space between paragraphs, without indenting. Indents may not transfer correctly, and paragraphs that run together can be hard to read.

Length: The Common App allows 250 to 650 words. Make sure to double-check your word count. If you try to paste more, it will cut off the rest.

Symbols and Special Characters: Some special formatting (like bold, italics, or unusual characters) may not appear as expected. Stick to plain text and basic punctuation to avoid display issues.

For example: Type your essay in a standard word processor, proofread and revise there, then paste it into the Common App. Before submitting, preview it to ensure the breaks and flow look right.

In summary, for the Common App: single-spaced, standard font when possible, one line break between paragraphs, no indents, and keep it plain and easy to read. Stick with these basics and your essay will look polished and professional!
