For tech careers, is USC or MIT generally the better choice?
I’m trying to compare these two schools mainly from the perspective of getting into tech after college. I know both are strong, but I’m not sure how much the school name, recruiting, alumni network, and internship opportunities matter for software or engineering jobs.
I’m not asking which school is “better” overall, just which one tends to make the path to a tech career easier or stronger.

The biggest practical tradeoff is breadth of access versus depth of concentration. USC can give you strong access to West Coast tech, a very large alumni network, and solid recruiting in Los Angeles and the Bay Area, but MIT puts you in a much denser engineering and computing environment where classmates, faculty, labs, startups, and employers are all unusually centered on tech. For software and engineering careers specifically, MIT usually makes the path more direct because the school’s academic culture, employer attention, and peer ecosystem are so heavily aligned with technical fields.

Being in Southern California can also help with entertainment tech, gaming, aerospace, and startup-adjacent opportunities.
The difference is that MIT is more saturated with technical opportunity on campus itself. Undergraduate research is deeply embedded, entrepreneurship is unusually active, and the student culture makes it easier to find ambitious collaborators for building products, competing in hackathons, or pursuing advanced engineering work.
For pure tech outcomes, especially software engineering, computer science, AI, robotics, hardware, or research-heavy engineering, MIT has the stronger edge. USC can still be an excellent route, particularly if you value its broader campus culture, location, or alumni reach, but if the question is which school more often makes a tech career easier to build from day one, the answer is MIT.
