Is Notre Dame or Virginia Tech better for cost after financial aid?

Virginia Tech is usually the safer bet for affordability after aid, especially if you are a Virginia resident, while Notre Dame can end up cheaper only for students with strong demonstrated financial need because it has very generous institutional aid. The biggest difference is how the two schools price for in-state versus out-of-state students and how much of the package comes from need-based grants versus merit. In practice, Virginia Tech often starts from a much lower cost for in-state families, while Notre Dame is more likely to substantially reduce the bill for lower-income students.

For Virginia Tech, residency matters a lot. In-state tuition and fees are significantly lower than out-of-state costs, so many Virginia families will find Tech more affordable even before aid is applied. Tech does offer scholarships and need-based assistance, but it is not known for routinely bringing costs down to the same level for out-of-state students unless they receive notable scholarship support.

Notre Dame works differently because it is a private university with one price for everyone and a reputation for strong need-based aid. For families with lower to moderate incomes and typical assets, Notre Dame can sometimes be surprisingly competitive despite the high sticker price because grants can replace a large portion of tuition. It is less attractive if you are counting on merit scholarships, since those are more limited and much of the aid focus is need-based.

The most useful way to think about this is family income and residency. If your family will qualify for substantial need-based aid, Notre Dame deserves a close look because its net price can drop a lot. If your family is unlikely to qualify for much need-based aid, or if you would be in-state at Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech is more often the budget-friendlier option.
