Notre Dame is known for tight undergraduate advising, strong placement into consulting, finance, tech, and pre-professional paths, and a highly connected alumni culture that graduates talk about as a real advantage. Penn State brings scale, spirited campus life, broad major options, major research opportunities, and one of the largest alumni networks in the country.

On academics, Notre Dame tends to feel more undergraduate-centered. Classes are often smaller earlier, access to professors can be more direct, and the school’s reputation carries especially well in fields where selective recruiting matters. Penn State is academically solid across many areas, with particular strength in engineering, business, supply chain, communications, and science, but the experience can be less personal because of the size.

Penn State’s brand is still widely respected, especially in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and its sheer alumni scale is a real asset, but it may depend more on your major, internships, and initiative.

If the price difference is modest, Notre Dame is the stronger overall value because the combination of undergraduate attention, brand strength, and alumni support often pays off for many years. If Penn State is dramatically cheaper, especially in-state, that financial gap can outweigh Notre Dame’s advantages and make Penn State the smarter choice.
