Brown vs Tufts for pre med: which is better for course flexibility and GPA support?

Brown is usually the more appealing option for a pre-med student who cares most about course flexibility and reducing GPA pressure. Its Open Curriculum removes most general education requirements, so it is easier to fit in med school prerequisites alongside classes you actually enjoy, and Brown’s grading culture is famously less punitive than many peer schools. The option to take courses S/NC and the absence of plus/minus grading at Brown can also make the academic experience feel less sharp-edged.

Brown tends to suit the student who wants room to explore without every semester feeling tightly scheduled around distribution requirements. For pre-med, that matters because biology, chemistry, physics, math, and often writing or social science coursework already create a structured path.

Tufts fits the student who wants a more traditional academic structure and is comfortable with a somewhat more conventional pre-health track. It has strong advising and excellent access to medical and research opportunities in the Boston area, but it does not offer the same level of curricular freedom as Brown.

On GPA support specifically, Brown has a reputation for being more forgiving in how students can navigate academics.
