Which is better for Chicago internships: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UIC?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and UIC and one of the biggest things for me is internship access in Chicago. I know UIUC has a strong reputation, but UIC is right in the city, so I’m wondering how that actually affects internship opportunities.

I want to understand which school is generally better for getting Chicago internships and why.

For Chicago internships specifically, UIC usually has the more direct advantage because you are already in the city and can realistically intern during the semester, not just in the summer. That matters a lot for fields where employers like part-time interns during the school year, and UIC students can commute to companies, hospitals, nonprofits, startups, and city agencies much more easily.

UIC tends to fit the student who wants constant access to Chicago while in school. If you want to build a local network over four years, attend in-person events without major travel, and stack semester internships or part-time professional experience, UIC makes that logistically much easier. That can be especially useful in business, public policy, communications, health-related fields, and other areas tied closely to city employers.

UIUC makes more sense for the student who wants a traditional campus experience and is comfortable using a stronger national brand in some fields to reach Chicago opportunities. In areas like engineering, computer science, accounting, and certain finance and tech paths, UIUC’s employer reputation is very strong. The catch is that most Chicago internships from UIUC are more likely to happen in the summer, or require more planning for travel and housing if they occur during the academic year.

So the answer depends on what kind of access you mean. If you mean easiest day-to-day access to Chicago internships while enrolled, UIC has the edge.

In practice, students who are proactive can get Chicago internships from either school. The difference is that UIC gives you location-based convenience, while UIUC gives you more of a campus-and-recruiting-based route into the city.
