Tufts vs BU: how does campus location affect the college experience?

BU’s location changes student life more dramatically than Tufts’ does. At BU, the city is part of the campus every day: Commonwealth Avenue runs through the university, the Green Line is right there, and students can walk to restaurants, internships, hospitals, and events without much planning. Tufts, in Medford and Somerville, feels more like a traditional campus with a clearer boundary, even though it still has solid access to Boston by T or shuttle.

The biggest difference is campus feel. BU is urban in a constant, visible way, with academic buildings, residence halls, traffic, shops, and city noise all woven together. That creates energy and convenience, but it also means campus can feel more spread along a corridor than enclosed. Tufts has a more self-contained setting on and around its hill, so day-to-day life often feels more centered around the university itself rather than the city flowing through it.

That carries over into social life. At BU, a lot of socializing naturally spills off campus because the options are immediately around you, whether that means grabbing food in Fenway, going to a concert, or exploring different neighborhoods. Tufts students have access to Davis Square, Somerville, and Boston, but social life tends to feel a bit more campus-based first, then city-based second. In practice, that can make Tufts feel tighter-knit for some students, while BU can feel more independent and self-directed.

Getting off campus is also easier in a truly spontaneous way at BU. You can often decide in the moment to go somewhere and be there quickly on foot or by T. Tufts students can absolutely get into the city, especially with nearby transit and the university’s connections to the MBTA, but it usually feels a little more intentional rather than seamless in the middle of the day.
