What are the college essay prompts for VCU this year?

I'm planning to apply to VCU for the fall semester, but I can't seem to find their specific essay prompts anywhere. Do they use the Common App essay, or do they have their own separate questions? My guidance counselor wasn't sure either.

If there are supplemental essays, does anyone have examples or know what topics VCU likes to see? I really want to make sure I'm prepared before I start drafting my essays. I’m hoping to major in graphic design, so if anything is different for the arts, please let me know! Any advice or links to the latest prompts would be appreciated.

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) admissions uses the Common Application, and for most undergraduate applicants—including those interested in graphic design—there is no additional university-specific essay required. Students are typically asked to submit one personal statement as part of the Common App, choosing from prompts such as describing a background, identity, interest, or talent; discussing a time you faced a challenge; recounting a time you questioned or challenged a belief; or sharing an essay on any topic of your choice.

If you’re applying to the School of the Arts (which includes graphic design), there are some important additional requirements. For the design program, you’ll need to submit a portfolio through VCUarts' SlideRoom platform. Along with your portfolio, VCUarts often asks for a short artist statement or answers to a couple of prompts specific to your creative interests and process. For 2024-2025, applicants are usually prompted to write 250-300 words about what draws them to graphic design, their artistic influences, and how they see design fitting into their future. Here’s an example of a graphic design applicant’s response:

"I first discovered graphic design through creating posters for my school’s theatre productions. The process of turning words into visuals felt like solving a puzzle, and it quickly became my passion. I’ve been inspired by Paula Scher’s environmental graphics and by local muralists who tell community stories. Graphic design, for me, is about amplifying voices and making information beautiful and accessible. I hope to collaborate with nonprofits to create campaigns for social causes. VCU’s dynamic arts community and emphasis on real-world, cross-disciplinary projects make it the ideal environment for me to grow as a designer and global citizen."

Keep an eye on the VCUarts application page for specific prompt updates, as they can vary year by year. Make sure your responses are focused, personal, and highlight your unique creative journey. If you have questions about the portfolio or writing portions, VCUarts admissions is responsive by email and offers portfolio advice sessions. Good luck with your application, and keep in mind that your visual and written work should reflect your individuality and enthusiasm for design!
