Is Carnegie Mellon or Notre Dame better for accounting careers?

For accounting specifically, Notre Dame is the clearer choice. Notre Dame has an established undergraduate business school, a dedicated accounting major through Mendoza, and a recruiting pipeline that is much more directly aligned with public accounting, audit, tax, and corporate accounting roles. Carnegie Mellon is excellent overall, but it is not especially known as an accounting destination in the same way, and its business strengths tend to lean more quantitative, analytical, and interdisciplinary.

A student who wants the most straightforward path into accounting firms and traditional accounting recruiting will usually find Notre Dame more on-target. Mendoza has a strong employer reputation in business fields, and the alumni network is notably helpful in finance, consulting, and accounting. That matters because accounting hiring is often relationship-driven and school-specific, especially for internships that turn into full-time offers.

Carnegie Mellon makes more sense for someone who says “accounting or something close to it” and is genuinely open to drifting toward finance, business analytics, information systems, or tech-adjacent business roles. Tepper is highly respected, and CMU’s brand carries a lot of weight with analytically oriented employers.

Another practical difference is the academic structure. At Notre Dame, accounting is a defined and visible part of the undergraduate business experience. At Carnegie Mellon, you would more likely be shaping an adjacent path rather than stepping into a deeply built-out accounting identity.

Notre Dame has the stronger edge for accounting careers. Carnegie Mellon is more compelling when the real interest is broader business with quantitative or technology crossover, not accounting itself.
