Carnegie Mellon vs. Michigan for engineering jobs: which is better for recruiting and internships?

I’m trying to decide between Carnegie Mellon and Michigan for engineering, and one of the biggest factors for me is job outcomes after graduation. I know both schools are strong, but I’m mainly wondering how they compare for recruiting, internships, and getting engineering jobs out of college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth of access versus scale of access. Carnegie Mellon tends to offer a tighter, more concentrated recruiting environment with especially strong employer pull in areas like computer engineering, robotics, software-adjacent engineering, and high-tech product work, while Michigan offers a much larger engineering ecosystem, a broader alumni base across industries, and huge recruiting volume across many engineering fields.

For pure employer recognition in engineering, both names carry real weight. Carnegie Mellon often has a sharper brand with tech-heavy employers and research-driven teams, especially in fields that overlap with computing. Michigan tends to be exceptionally strong with large national recruiters in mechanical, aerospace, automotive, industrial, civil, electrical, and manufacturing-oriented roles, partly because its engineering college is so large and deeply connected to industry.

For internships, Michigan may give you more sheer options on campus because of its size, employer variety, and alumni reach. There are a lot of companies actively hiring there, and the school has strong pipelines into major corporations. Carnegie Mellon can feel more targeted: fewer students per niche, strong faculty and lab connections, and excellent access to employers looking for highly technical candidates.

A lot depends on what kind of engineering job you mean. If you are leaning toward robotics, AI-adjacent engineering, embedded systems, software-connected hardware, or startups, Carnegie Mellon often gives a noticeable edge. If you want traditional engineering breadth, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, consulting, or big corporate rotational programs, Michigan is hard to beat.

In terms of getting an engineering job out of college, neither school is likely to hold you back. If the question is which school gives the stronger edge with employers overall, I’d give a slight advantage to Michigan for breadth and recruiting volume, but a slight advantage to Carnegie Mellon for certain highly technical and tech-centered paths.
