WashU vs Brown for academic rigor: which school is more challenging academically?

The biggest practical difference is structure versus freedom: WashU tends to feel more demanding day to day because many programs, especially pre-med, engineering, and some science tracks, have clearer requirements and a heavier steady workload, while Brown often feels less pressure-driven because its open curriculum gives students much more control over what and how they take courses. At Brown, students can avoid distribution requirements and can take many classes S/NC, which changes the feel of rigor even when the material itself is very strong.

That does not mean Brown is easy. Brown has plenty of very challenging courses, and students who build a tough schedule can absolutely have an intense academic experience. But Brown’s system tends to make the pressure feel more self-directed. Students often talk about being pushed by their own choices and curiosity rather than by the institution’s requirements.

Brown’s atmosphere is often seen as more flexible and less competitive in tone, even though the students are extremely capable and the classes can be difficult.

So if the question is which school is more challenging academically for the average student on a day-to-day basis, WashU probably has that reputation. If the question is where the ceiling for difficulty is higher, that depends much more on the student, because Brown lets you create either a very intense path or a more balanced one.
