Is UC Davis worth the cost compared with Santa Clara University for an undergraduate degree?
I’m trying to decide between UC Davis and Santa Clara University, and the price difference is a big factor for my family. UC Davis is much cheaper for me, while Santa Clara would likely mean taking on more loans.
I know both schools have good reputations, but I’m trying to understand whether Santa Clara’s higher cost is usually worth it in terms of academics, internships, and career outcomes compared with UC Davis.

For most students, UC Davis is the better value if it is significantly cheaper. It is a well-regarded public research university with strong academics, a large alumni network, and solid recruiting across fields, so paying much more for Santa Clara usually only makes sense if you have a very specific reason to want Santa Clara’s environment or location. If Santa Clara would require meaningful loans, that cost difference is hard to justify for a typical undergraduate experience.
UC Davis makes the most sense for a student who wants broad academic options, the resources of a major research university, and a college-town setting. It has particular strength in areas like biological sciences, agriculture and environmental fields, engineering, economics, and pre-health pathways, and employers know the UC name well. You also get access to research labs, a wide range of student organizations, and a large campus community without taking on as much financial pressure.
Santa Clara is more compelling for a student who really wants a smaller private-school experience and plans to take full advantage of being in Silicon Valley. Its location can help with internships during the academic year, especially in business and tech-adjacent roles, and its undergraduate focus can mean smaller classes and more direct access to professors earlier on. For some students, that combination is genuinely valuable, but it is not automatically worth a much higher price tag.
The key question is whether Santa Clara offers something specific that UC Davis does not for your goals. If you are set on finance, accounting, or certain Silicon Valley business and startup pathways, Santa Clara may offer a clearer day-to-day networking advantage. But if your likely outcome is taking similar classes, joining similar clubs, and applying to many of the same internships anyway, graduating from UC Davis with less debt usually puts you in the stronger long-term position.
Lower debt gives you more freedom after college to choose internships, grad school, or first jobs based on fit rather than salary pressure.
