Is UC Davis or Pepperdine worth the cost for an undergraduate degree?

UC Davis is usually the better value for an undergraduate degree, especially if the price gap is large for your family. It has a strong national reputation, broad academic depth, major research-university resources, and a large alumni network, all at a cost that is often much easier to justify than Pepperdine’s private-school tuition.

One big differentiator is academic scale and breadth. UC Davis offers far more depth across majors, research labs, faculty specialties, and interdisciplinary options, which matters if your interests shift during college or if you want access to undergraduate research, pre-health advising, agriculture and environmental strengths, engineering, or a wide range of social sciences. Pepperdine has respected programs, but it is smaller and more limited in academic scope.

Another is long-term value relative to debt. For an undergraduate degree, avoiding heavy borrowing usually matters more than paying a premium for a more intimate campus or private-school brand. UC Davis is well known by employers and graduate programs, and its degree carries plenty of weight.

Pepperdine’s higher cost can make sense in narrower cases: if the net price ends up surprisingly close after aid, if you strongly want its smaller class environment, Christian identity, Malibu location, or specific campus culture, or if those features would clearly help you thrive. But if the question is pure value for the money, UC Davis usually comes out ahead.
