Which is better for New York internships: NYU or Columbia?

I’m trying to decide between NYU and Columbia and one of the biggest factors for me is internship access in New York City. I want to be in a place where it’s relatively easy to find internships during the school year and summer, especially in fields like business, media, or finance.

Both schools are in New York, but I’m wondering whether one has a real advantage for landing internships because of location, alumni network, or connections.

The biggest practical tradeoff is immersion versus brand leverage. NYU often makes internships feel more built into everyday student life because so many students are already commuting downtown for roles in business, media, fashion, entertainment, and finance, while Columbia can give you a slightly stronger boost in certain employers’ eyes because of its name, alumni reach, and recruiting pull, especially in finance and consulting. Since both schools are in New York City, neither school has a location advantage in the basic sense of access, but they do translate that access a bit differently.

For business and media, NYU has a very visible edge in day-to-day internship culture. Its downtown presence and the fact that many students intern during the semester can make the process feel more normalized and easier to plug into.

Columbia absolutely places students into strong New York internships too, and its alumni network is powerful across finance, consulting, journalism, policy, and tech. In some industries, especially high-finance and more prestige-sensitive employers, Columbia’s brand may open doors a bit faster at the initial screening stage. But the campus is less woven into the intern-while-taking-classes culture than NYU, partly because Columbia feels more traditionally residential and academically self-contained.

If your target is finance specifically, the comparison depends a lot on which NYU school you mean.

So for sheer New York internship integration, especially across business and media, NYU has the more practical advantage. If you are weighing prestige-sensitive recruiting, especially in finance, Columbia is fully competitive and sometimes stronger, but NYU often wins on volume, convenience, and being surrounded by a student culture that treats in-semester internships as routine.
