What is campus life like at Indiana University vs. Emory University?

Indiana University feels much more like a classic big-campus social experience, while Emory tends to feel smaller, more academically centered, and less dominated by school-spirit traditions. At IU, the size of the student body, Big Ten atmosphere, and visible Greek life make campus energy feel louder and more collective. At Emory, student life is active too, but it usually comes through smaller communities, campus organizations, and Atlanta-based opportunities rather than one dominant social scene.

One major difference is how public and constant the social energy feels. IU has the kind of environment where sports, tailgates, large events, and a busy weekend party scene are very noticeable parts of student life, even for students who are not deeply involved in them. Emory is social in a more low-key way. Students often build their routines around friend groups, clubs, cultural organizations, pre-professional groups, and outings in Atlanta, so the campus can feel quieter and less like everyone is participating in the same thing.

The residential feel is different too. IU has a more traditional college-town setting in Bloomington, and that gives campus life a self-contained feel because so much of students’ daily life revolves around the university. Emory sits in the Atlanta area, which gives students access to restaurants, internships, and off-campus activities, but it also means campus culture can feel a little more dispersed. Some students love that balance, while others want a more all-in campus bubble.

Clubs matter at both schools, but they play a different role. At Emory, clubs and student organizations often carry more of the social weight because they are a key way students find community. At IU, clubs are important too, but they exist alongside a much more visible large-scale social scene.
