Indiana University vs. USC: Which Has Better Campus Life?

For the most consistently immersive, easy-to-meet-people campus life, Indiana University Bloomington has the edge. Bloomington is a true college town where student life, restaurants, nightlife, sporting events, and weekend plans are concentrated around the university. USC has an extremely active campus too, but its Los Angeles setting makes the experience feel more urban and somewhat less all-encompassing.

IU’s residential, Big Ten environment creates frequent built-in social opportunities: large athletics crowds, residence-hall communities, Greek life, student organizations, and a downtown area that students can reach easily. Because so many students live near campus and the town revolves around IU, it can be easier to run into classmates and form a regular social circle without extensive planning or transportation.

USC offers a particularly energetic mix of clubs, cultural organizations, campus traditions, Greek life, and major sports, with the added advantage of access to Los Angeles internships, concerts, museums, and neighborhoods. Its student body is more connected to a major city, however, so students may disperse off campus more often and need to be more intentional about building their community. The central USC campus is cohesive and busy, but the surrounding area does not have the same relaxed college-town rhythm as Bloomington.
