Is Boston University or Tufts better for city life and access to Boston?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Boston University is embedded in Boston every day, while Tufts gives you a more traditional campus feel and requires more intentional trips into the city. BU runs along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston itself, with city neighborhoods immediately around you. Tufts is in Medford and Somerville, so Boston is accessible, but it does not usually feel like you are living in downtown Boston on a daily basis.

For day-to-day city life, BU is the clearer answer. You can step off campus and already be in a dense urban environment with restaurants, stores, apartments, traffic, public transit, and easy access to neighborhoods like Fenway, Back Bay, and Kenmore. The campus is very walkable in the sense that you are constantly moving through city blocks, though some students find BU’s long, linear layout less cozy than a contained campus.

Its location near Davis Square and Somerville gives you a lively, walkable surrounding area. That said, the immediate feeling is more residential and campus-centered than BU’s. Getting into central Boston is very doable, but it usually feels like a trip you choose to make rather than an extension of your front door.

If what you want is a strong urban experience where the city is part of your routine, BU fits that much more directly. Tufts offers access to Boston plus a more distinct campus community, but for actually feeling connected to city life every day, Boston University comes out ahead.
