Is Pitt or NYU better for a finance major?
I’m trying to decide between Pitt and NYU for finance and keep seeing mixed opinions online. I know both can lead to good outcomes, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally stronger for finance students.
I’m especially thinking about overall reputation for finance and how well each school is known in that field.

The biggest practical tradeoff is target-school access versus cost and overall value. For finance specifically, NYU has a much stronger reputation, far deeper recruiting pipelines into top banks and finance firms, and a location in New York that makes networking and internships much easier during the school year. Pitt can absolutely lead to solid finance outcomes, but it does not carry the same weight in the finance world and is not viewed at the same level by employers in high-finance recruiting.
If your question is purely which school is stronger for finance, the answer is NYU. Stern is one of the most recognized undergraduate business programs in the country, and even outside of Stern, NYU is closely tied to the finance industry because of its employer relationships, alumni presence, and Manhattan location. That matters a lot in fields like investment banking, asset management, sales and trading, and certain corporate finance tracks where school visibility can directly affect access.
Pitt is better thought of as a solid university with respectable business preparation rather than a finance powerhouse. You can still build a strong career from Pitt, especially in corporate finance, regional banking, consulting-adjacent roles, and with proactive networking. But compared head-to-head, Pitt is not as well known nationally for finance, and it will usually require more hustle to reach the same kinds of highly competitive opportunities that NYU students encounter more naturally.
So in terms of overall reputation for finance and how well each school is known in that field, NYU is clearly ahead. The only reason this becomes a real debate is price. If NYU would require dramatically more debt, that can outweigh the prestige advantage. But on reputation and finance-specific strength alone, NYU is the stronger choice.
