Is the University of Wisconsin or Ohio State worth the money for an out-of-state student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that both schools can deliver the classic large flagship experience, but out-of-state cost can be hard to justify unless one school gives you a noticeably better academic fit, stronger program access in your field, or enough aid to narrow the gap. Wisconsin stands out for its strong academic reputation, especially in areas like engineering, business, economics, political science, and many sciences, while Ohio State tends to offer enormous scale, a very broad range of majors, major research activity, and one of the largest alumni networks in the country. Since both are expensive for nonresidents, the question is less whether either is “bad value” and more whether one gives you something concrete that a cheaper option would not.

Wisconsin often feels a bit more academically focused and compact around Madison, which many students love because the college-town setting is lively and the campus identity is strong. Ohio State is also academically strong, but Columbus gives it a more urban, sprawling feel, with especially wide internship and industry access simply because of the size of the university and city. In practice, both can open doors, but neither automatically makes sense at a very high out-of-state price if you are undecided on major or could attend a solid in-state option for much less.

For value, major matters a lot. If you have a specific program where one school is clearly better for you, such as a department with better course access, research, employer ties, or honors opportunities, that can justify extra cost. If your intended field is offered well at both, then paying a large premium for branding and campus life alone is harder to defend.

Between the two, Wisconsin often has the edge in perceived academic prestige, while Ohio State may feel like the more practical buy if its aid is better or if you want the scale and connections of Columbus. If the costs are similarly high and there is no major-specific advantage, I would be cautious about paying full out-of-state tuition for either one.
