Is the University of Wisconsin or UC Berkeley worth the cost for an in-state student?

For an in-state California student, UC Berkeley is usually the one that makes sense to prioritize on value. Berkeley gives you the in-state UC price, has exceptional academic breadth, and carries especially strong weight in fields like engineering, computer science, economics, business-related recruiting, and research. For most students, it would be hard to justify paying substantially more to attend Wisconsin if Berkeley is the alternative and cost is a major concern.

Berkeley tends to fit students who want a very large, high-intensity public university with deep access to research, Bay Area internships, and nationally recognized departments. It is especially compelling for students who already know they want a field where Berkeley has unusually strong employer recognition or graduate school placement. If your family is cost-conscious, getting that level of opportunity at in-state tuition is a major advantage.

Wisconsin is absolutely a strong school, and it can be worth it for a student who prefers Madison’s environment enough that they would thrive more there. Some students are drawn to its classic college-town feel, school spirit, and certain standout programs. If Wisconsin offered unusual merit aid, a special honors opportunity, or a program that matched your goals better than Berkeley’s version, that could change the equation.

But on long-term value alone, the burden is usually on Wisconsin to prove why it deserves the extra cost. Academic quality is high at both schools, yet Berkeley’s combination of prestige, program strength, and in-state pricing is unusually hard to beat. Unless the price ends up surprisingly close, or you have a very specific personal or academic reason to want Wisconsin, Berkeley is typically the stronger financial decision for a California resident.
