Georgetown or William & Mary for pre-law: which is better for law school preparation?

Georgetown has the edge for pre-law preparation, especially if you want access to law-adjacent opportunities during college. Its location in Washington, DC, puts you close to courts, federal agencies, think tanks, nonprofits, and policy organizations, and Georgetown students can realistically build internships and part-time experiences into the academic year rather than only the summer.

That matters because law school applicants benefit from strong writing, research, and recommendation letters tied to serious academic or public-facing work.

William & Mary is still excellent, but its biggest differentiator is a more intimate undergraduate environment. It is known for strong teaching in fields like government, history, philosophy, and English, all of which can prepare students very well for law school by sharpening reading, argument, and analytical writing. In many cases, students find it easier to build close relationships with professors there, which can help a lot when it is time to ask for detailed recommendation letters.

Another real distinction is campus culture around politics and public affairs. Georgetown has a denser concentration of students pursuing policy, international affairs, government, and legal careers, so you are surrounded by more talks, networking, alumni connections, and organizations directly tied to those interests. William & Mary offers serious academic preparation too, but Georgetown’s ecosystem is simply more saturated with day-to-day legal and policy exposure.

Cost should still matter in this decision because law school is expensive, and undergraduate debt can limit your options later. If William & Mary would be meaningfully cheaper, that financial gap could outweigh Georgetown’s advantage. But on academics, advising, and access to law-related opportunities while still in college, Georgetown is the more powerful launch point.
