Is Georgetown or Oxford better preparation for a career in diplomacy?

For a student aiming at the U.S. Foreign Service or Washington-based diplomacy, Georgetown is the more directly connected undergraduate choice. Its School of Foreign Service is built around international affairs, and its Washington, D.C., location makes internships during the academic year realistic at the State Department, embassies, think tanks, international organizations, and congressional foreign-policy offices. Georgetown also has an especially concentrated alumni network in U.S. government and foreign-policy work.

Oxford is an outstanding preparation for diplomacy of a more international or UK-centered kind. Its tutorial system develops the close reading, argument, writing, and policy analysis that diplomatic work demands, while degrees such as Philosophy, Politics and Economics, History and Politics, and related subjects carry strong recognition internationally. Oxford can be particularly compelling for students who may pursue the UK Foreign, Commonwealth  Development Office, multilateral organizations, international law, or a career based outside the United States.

The practical distinction is citizenship and location. The U.S. Foreign Service requires U.S. citizenship, and Georgetown gives a U.S. citizen unusually easy access to relevant semester-time experience and mentors. UK diplomatic-service pathways have their own nationality and eligibility rules, so Oxford is not automatically a route into British diplomacy for an international student.

Neither university guarantees entry into a diplomatic service; formal government hiring processes, language ability, regional expertise, writing skills, and substantive experience matter greatly. Georgetown offers a clearer day-to-day launchpad for an American student pursuing U.S. diplomacy, whereas Oxford suits a student drawn to intensive academic study and an internationally mobile, British or multilateral-oriented career.
