UC Berkeley vs Fordham for finance careers: which is better for breaking into finance?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Fordham, and I’m mainly interested in finance careers after college. I know both schools can lead to good opportunities, but I’m not sure which one is better for recruiting, internships, and getting into finance roles after graduation.

I’m not looking for rankings in general, just which school seems stronger for someone who wants to work in finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is target-school strength versus New York proximity. UC Berkeley has a stronger overall brand in finance and sends students into a wider range of high-end finance roles, especially through Haas and the larger Berkeley alumni network, while Fordham gives you day-to-day access to New York internships during the school year and more immediate proximity to firms.

For breaking into finance, Berkeley is usually the more powerful platform. Its name carries more weight nationally, and for competitive paths like investment banking, buy-side roles, and top analyst programs, Berkeley tends to open more doors.

Fordham is not a weak option at all, especially for students who want to hustle early and take advantage of being in NYC. Being able to intern during the semester can matter a lot, and Fordham students can absolutely reach banking, asset management, and corporate finance. But in finance recruiting, location helps most when it is paired with very strong school pipelines, and Berkeley’s pipeline is typically stronger.

One important detail is that at Berkeley, access to Haas is not automatic if you are not directly admitted, so you should look closely at your academic path there.

If your question is purely which school gives you the stronger launchpad for finance, I would take UC Berkeley. Fordham becomes more compelling if cost is much lower for you, you want to build your career specifically in New York from day one, or you strongly value semester-time internships over the broader recruiting power Berkeley usually offers.
