UC Berkeley vs Cornell for hotel management: which is better for hospitality careers?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out where I’d have the better path into hospitality and hotel management. UC Berkeley and Cornell are both options I’m looking at, but I’m not sure how they compare for building a career in the hotel industry.

I want to understand which school is generally stronger for hospitality-related opportunities and career preparation.

Cornell is the clearer choice for hotel management and hospitality careers. Its Nolan School of Hotel Administration is one of the most established hospitality programs in the country, with coursework built specifically around hotels, real estate, food and beverage, revenue management, and service operations.

The biggest difference is academic specialization. Berkeley does not have a dedicated undergraduate hotel administration program, so you would likely piece together hospitality-relevant study through business, economics, or other majors. That can work if you want a broader path into business, but it is not the same as being trained inside a school designed around the hospitality industry itself.

Cornell also gives you a much more targeted professional network. The alumni base in hotels, resorts, restaurants, and hospitality investment is a major asset, and the school has a long reputation that industry employers know immediately. For a field where relationships and brand familiarity matter, that kind of pipeline is hard to match.

Another important separator is experiential preparation. Cornell’s hotel program is built with internships, industry-facing classes, and hands-on exposure in mind, so students are constantly engaging with hospitality as a real operating business rather than just studying management in the abstract. Berkeley offers excellent overall career preparation, but its strengths lean more toward tech, entrepreneurship, economics, and broad business-adjacent fields than hotel management specifically.

Berkeley would make more sense only if your interests are drifting away from hotel operations and toward a wider business route, especially one connected to real estate, consulting, or entrepreneurship outside hospitality. For someone who already knows they want the strongest undergraduate runway into the hotel industry itself, Cornell stands out by a noticeable margin.
