Is UC Berkeley or UCL better for study abroad students?

UC Berkeley is usually the more immersive choice for a study abroad student who wants a classic campus experience alongside strong academics. Berkeley has a defined college town feel, a highly visible student culture, and a more self-contained campus life than UCL. For one term abroad, that often makes it easier to plug into clubs, traditions, and day-to-day student energy quickly.

Berkeley stands out most on campus life. The campus is large, lively, and central to student identity, and the surrounding area is heavily shaped by the university. That matters for visiting students because it creates more obvious entry points for community, whether through events, student organizations, or simply being surrounded by other students. UCL is respected and active, but its urban setup in central London can feel more dispersed, with student life spread across the city rather than concentrated in one place.

Academically, both are excellent, but the classroom experience often feels different. Berkeley can offer the big American university atmosphere, including broader extracurricular engagement tied closely to academics, research culture, and department life. UCL is also very strong academically, especially if you want to study within a distinctly British system, but that system can feel more independent and less socially integrated into daily campus experience during a short stay.

The city factor depends on what kind of experience you want, but Berkeley is often easier to navigate as a student base. You still get access to a major metro area through nearby San Francisco and the Bay Area, yet your daily life remains anchored in a recognizable campus community. UCL gives you London, which is exciting and unmatched in scale, but for some study abroad students that can make the experience feel more like living in a huge city than being part of one close-knit university environment.
