Is UC Berkeley or USC better for finance careers?
I’m a high school junior trying to figure out which school would be the stronger choice if I want to go into finance after college.
Both UC Berkeley and USC seem like good options, but I keep seeing people say different things about recruiting, alumni networks, and internship opportunities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Berkeley usually gives you broader academic prestige and stronger pull for highly competitive finance recruiting, while USC often offers a tighter private-school network and more hands-on access to alumni, especially in Southern California. For finance, Berkeley’s Haas reputation carries a lot of weight, and even students outside Haas can place well if they build the right experience early. USC, though, is known for a very loyal alumni base and can feel easier to navigate personally when you are looking for mentorship, referrals, and internship connections.
If your goal is high-finance paths like investment banking, buy-side recruiting later on, or East Coast credibility, Berkeley tends to have the edge. It is especially well regarded by employers who know the academic rigor of Berkeley and the strength of Haas. The catch is that Berkeley can be more competitive internally, and at a large public university you usually have to be very proactive about joining finance clubs, networking, and securing recruiting prep.
USC is still very solid for finance careers, particularly if you want to build your career in Los Angeles or stay closely connected to the Southern California business scene. Marshall has a strong reputation, and USC’s alumni network is one of the school’s biggest advantages because students often find it easier to get responses and informational interviews. The environment can feel more supportive and relationship-driven, which matters a lot in finance recruiting.
Cost should matter here too. If you are in-state for Berkeley, the value can be hard to beat. If USC gives you major merit or need-based aid, that can narrow the gap or even make USC the smarter financial decision.
Between the two, Berkeley is the stronger name for finance recruiting overall. USC becomes very compelling when the network, campus experience, Southern California placement, or financial aid package is meaningfully better for you.
