What is the difference between Northeastern and Northeastern University Boston campus?

They are not separate schools in the way applicants usually mean. “Northeastern” typically refers to Northeastern University as a whole, and “Northeastern University Boston” refers to its main undergraduate campus in Boston, which is the campus most students mean when they say they are applying to Northeastern.

If you are the kind of student expecting the classic Northeastern experience, that usually means the Boston campus: the main academic departments, the best-known co-op ecosystem, Division I athletics, and the central urban campus near Back Bay, Fenway, and the Longwood area. When people casually say “Northeastern,” this is almost always what they mean.

The confusion comes from Northeastern expanding its network. Those are still connected to Northeastern University, but they are not the same thing as being directly enrolled on the Boston campus.

So in the application process, read the wording carefully. If an option says Boston, that indicates the main campus. If it mentions another location or pathway program, that is a distinct entry route within Northeastern University, not a different university entirely.
