How does out-of-state admission compare between University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Wisconsin Madison?

For an out-of-state applicant, UIUC is usually the tougher admit overall, especially if you are applying to one of its high-demand direct-entry majors. UIUC admits by college and often by specific major, so the difficulty can jump a lot for programs like engineering, computer science, or business. UW Madison is also selective for non-residents, but its process is less dominated by narrow major-based gates because many students are not admitted to an ultra-specific program in quite the same way.

The biggest difference is how much your intended field affects the odds. At UIUC, applying to Grainger Engineering, CS, Gies, or other capped programs can make admission substantially harder than the university-wide picture suggests. At UW Madison, selectivity still varies by school or program, but for many applicants the admissions process feels a bit broader and less sharply tied to one exact major at the moment of application.

The nonresident dynamic also matters. Both schools enroll large numbers of out-of-state students and both are well known nationally, so neither is an easy option from outside the state.
